Everything You Need To Know About the Ledger – The World’s First Bikeable Building
The world’s first bikeable building, the Ledger in Bentonville, recently opened its doors to the public. Though the construction isn’t fully complete even after two years (after all, it takes a lot of time to build something that’s going to break world records), the space is finally usable, which has led many locals and visitors alike to want to sneak a peek.
Moreover, it’s important to note that while the building’s main purpose is to serve as an office space for tenants, visitors are welcome too, always under a few conditions I’ll be discussing below.
By this point, I sense your curiosity growing, so let’s not wait any longer and dive into everything you need to know about the Ledger building in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Features
The most notable feature of this building is obviously its bike-ability, with a zig-zag switchback of a walkable path and a bike ramp that can be used simultaneously without risking walkers crashing into cyclists or vice versa.
During business hours, which I’ll discuss below, the public is welcome to use the bicycle tamps as well as all bike-related amenities, so I highly recommend paying the place a visit even if you don’t actually plan on renting a space in it.
Bike-related amenities you can find in the Ledger include
- Charging stations for eBikes
- Storage areas
- A bikers’ lounge, complete with changing rooms, showers, and lockers
However, though the building was initially famous for its bike-ability, those who’ve actually visited it or, better yet, worked on its premises, know that the practicality and draw of the space originate from a plethora of other features and amenities. These include
- Spacious event spaces.
- Gorgeous light fixtures.
- A combination of shared workspaces and private offices.
Another great feature of the building, if you can call it that, is the fact that a significant portion of its space is dedicated to local artwork, and as a result, many pieces are either showcased or stored right in the building for visitors and enthusiasts to enjoy.
Purpose
According to Ledger’s own website, the ultimate purpose of the building is to bring people together in a space that’s as inspiring as it is practical. They noticed that the average worker spent a lot of sitting at their desk and leasing a generally sedentary lifestyle, that’s why they wanted to introduce the bike ramps all over the building in an effort to not only make going to work something one would look forward to but also improve the workers’ cardiac health.
However, since the space created offered such a great experience to everyone in it, they decided to open their doors to the public and build an actual city center. Now, offices aren’t the only ones occupying the Ledger. Plenty of businesses are calling this building their home, including a plethora of coffee shops, boutiques, and so on. So, even if you’re just visiting, you can make a day out of your time at the Ledger.
Hours and Location
If you’re interested in visiting the Ledger, you’ll be pleased to learn that the building operates every business day (Monday to Friday). Its doors open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 5:00 p.m.; however, these hours can be subject to change for those who hold a membership card.
If you’re interested in a membership card, there are plenty of options to choose from. You can get a day pass if you’re a visitor or a discounted member day pass if you’re currently using an office space inside the building. However, for more information on the types of membership passes that are available, I recommend contacting the Ledger directly either by phone or email (more on that below.
The building itself is located at 240 S Main Street, Bentonville, Arkansas. So, if you’re ever in town, make sure to use this info to make visiting the Ledger part of your itinerary.
One thing to note, though, is that bike ramps are only open to the public during recreation hours. The good news is that recreation hours include all seven days of the week; however, the bad news is that they refer to a timeframe that lasts from sunrise to sunset, and, as a result, is dependent on seasons and weather conditions.
Also, I have a 3-day itinerary that can help you decide what activities to do if you’re overwhelmed by everything Northwest Arkansas has to offer.
