3 Wild Things Happening in Northwest Arkansas
Hi—I’m Philip Shepard with All Things Northwest Arkansas. I live here, I sell real estate here, and I can say (without hyperbole) that Northwest Arkansas is the best place to live in America. There’s always something interesting happening, and this week I want to break down three newsy, weird, and genuinely exciting updates across NWA: a Yelp top-100 shoutout for a local sandwich shop, a new pocket park in Fayetteville, and a massive $230 million infrastructure move in Springdale that could shape growth for years.
1. Mel Sandwich Kitchen Bar Lands on Yelp’s Top 100
Love to see it—Mel Sandwich Kitchen Bar just landed in Yelp’s top 100 sandwich list (coming in at #70). That’s out of tens of thousands of contenders, and yeah, that’s a big deal for a Bentonville spot that isn’t in Manhattan or Chicago. Local restaurants like Mel, Yayo’s, and Preacher Son keep popping up on these lists, and it’s a huge feather in Bentonville’s cap.
If you’re visiting Bentonville, put Mel on your must-try list. I usually go for the chicken pesto sandwich—simple, dependable, and always great. It’s exactly the kind of neighborhood gem that makes our food scene stand out.
2. New Pocket Park in South Fayetteville (South Yard)
Fayetteville keeps getting better for walkers, bikers, and anyone who likes open public spaces. A new pocket park just opened in the South Yard area, right along the Razorback Greenway.
Why this matters:
- It connects to the Greenway, making it easy to bike or walk from South Yard up to downtown Fayetteville and Dixon Street.
- It sits in a lively stretch with pizza, barbecue, and local favorites—great for a quick stop or a picnic between errands.
- It’s a welcome public space for nearby townhomes/condos—small parks like this are perfect for neighborhood gatherings and short outdoor breaks.
Think of this pocket park as another connective thread in Fayetteville’s fabric: restaurants, trails, public spaces, and the Ramble near the Fayetteville library all within easy reach. It’s the kind of small addition that boosts quality of life in a big way.
3. Springdale’s Big Move: $230 Million Sewer Upgrade
OK, this one sounds boring at first—“sewer project” isn’t the sexiest headline—but it’s actually huge for the future of growth in Northwest Arkansas. Springdale just announced plans for up to a $230 million sewer improvement package. Here’s why that matters:
- Other cities in the region (Bentonville and Centerton, for example) have hit development slowdowns or moratoriums tied to sewer capacity and infrastructure limits.
- Springdale is planning ahead to avoid that same problem by budgeting and building capacity now—smart, proactive city planning.
- Springdale is on the rise: new downtown amenities, parks, Airbnbs, housing developments, and even a new highway connection that makes access to I-49 easier. This infrastructure investment supports that momentum and lays groundwork for sustainable growth.
Springdale’s been a bit of an underdog, but over the last few years it’s really popped off. This move shows local leaders are thinking long-term: zoning, sewer capacity, trails, and business development are being coordinated so the city can keep growing without running into limits later.

Why These Three Things Matter Together
On the surface these updates look unrelated: a sandwich shop, a pocket park, and sewer infrastructure. But together they tell the story of a region that’s enjoying organic cultural growth (restaurants and parks) while also facing the real, nuts-and-bolts challenges of rapid expansion (infrastructure). Good food and small parks make life great today; strategic infrastructure spending makes that quality of life sustainable tomorrow.
Springdale’s forward planning, Fayetteville’s human-scale improvements, and Bentonville’s thriving culinary scene are all part of why Northwest Arkansas is such an attractive place to live—and why I chose to move here myself.
