NWA Update: Aquatic Center, Crystal Bridges Expansion & $500M Beaver Lake Plan

4 Wild Things Happening in Northwest Arkansas (Including a $500 Million Project)

Hey — I’m Philip Shepard with All Things Northwest Arkansas. I make these updates every week because honestly, there’s always something moving and changing in NWA. If you’re curious why I moved here (I used to be a real estate broker in Illinois — let’s just say I could’ve gone anywhere, and I chose Northwest Arkansas), keep reading. This week we’ve got four big, wild stories: a giant aquatic center at Lewis Park, Crystal Bridges’ huge expansion opening in 2026, a new restaurant-church mixed-use project in Fayetteville, and a massive $500 million Beaver Lake expansion. Let’s dive in.

1. Lewis Park is Getting a Massive Aquatic Center

Fayetteville’s Lewis Park — the soccer-field-filled park on the city’s west side — is getting a brand-new aquatic center. And it looks like they’re not messing around: the plans show multiple pools (I’m seeing five), slides, and family-friendly amenities.

This is part of a broader trend across Northwest Arkansas: cities are stepping in to provide public aquatic facilities because many new subdivisions and builders aren’t installing private neighborhood pools. For families or buyers looking at homes on Fayetteville’s central-west side, this is a major plus — easier summer fun, more recreation for kids, and a boost for nearby property appeal.

Why this matters

  • More community amenities make neighborhoods more attractive to buyers and renters.
  • Public pools are a great alternative when developers skip private pools in subdivisions.
  • Expect increased activity around Lewis Park — more events, families, and foot traffic.

2. Crystal Bridges’ Expansion — Grand Opening June 6–7, 2026

Big news for arts lovers: Crystal Bridges in Bentonville has announced its expansion will open the weekend of June 6–7, 2026. The expansion roughly doubles the museum’s footprint and promises major new exhibits and gallery space.

Quick backstory: Alice Walton built Crystal Bridges nearly a decade ago and — despite the early skepticism from the art world — the museum has become a cultural powerhouse. One of the things I love about it (and what surprised a lot of people) is the museum’s commitment to free admission. Over the years Crystal Bridges has hosted some amazing pieces — including rare historical American documents — and the expansion only increases the museum’s regional and national pull.

Want to visit?

Mark your calendar for the opening weekend in June 2026. If you’re planning a trip, I put together several 3-day itineraries tailored to different types of visitors: the Foodie, the Artist, the Adventurer, the Sports Enthusiast, the Sightseer, and the Kids. They’re great if you want to see whether NWA really is “the best place to live in America.”

3. A New “Restaurant-Church” Mixed-Use Project Near Gulley Park

Fayetteville is getting an interesting mixed-use project near Gulley Park — a restaurant built in a converted church-style space (they’re calling it a restaurant-church for now). The rendering looks sharp, and they’re planning multiple townhouses right next to it (about eight units).

This is part of a broader movement toward more walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods in NWA: think restaurants, coffee shops, and small businesses integrated directly into residential developments. Examples already exist around Bentonville and Rogers — Lumen, Crystal Flats, and others have commercial space on lower levels with housing above or nearby.

Why mixed-use is catching on

  • Walkability and convenience: fewer car trips, more neighborhood life.
  • Better use of urban lots: restaurants and retail get built where they’ll be used daily.
  • Appeals to buyers who want a live/work/play neighborhood rather than a drive-everywhere suburb.

4. A $500+ Million Expansion Around Beaver Lake

Here’s the big one I teased: there’s a $500 million-plus series of investments tied to Beaver Lake and the region’s water infrastructure. Beaver Lake is the primary water source for much of Northwest Arkansas, and recent projects and planning show the region is getting serious about preparing for growth.

Details to note:

  • Multiple major projects are underway (I counted over 10 projects being discussed), including large pipelines to move water across the region. Some of these pipelines are cutting through the south end and toward places like Bentonville.
  • Demand for water and utility capacity has jumped dramatically in recent years — planning documents have cited large percentage increases in usage and projections since 2020.
  • The Beaver Dam also contributes to local power generation, and utility planning in Arkansas includes a mix of hydropower and larger regional energy sources.

What this tells me: NWA leaders are planning ahead. Instead of scrambling to patch utility systems after growth happens, the area is investing up-front so development and population increases won’t be held back by water or infrastructure constraints. That kind of forward-thinking investment is a big win for long-term growth and stability.

More ways I help you explore NWA

If you’re curious about moving here or visiting, I’ve put together several free resources to help you decide:

  • 3-Day Itineraries for different visit styles (Foodie, Artist, Adventurer, Sports Enthusiast, Sightseer, Kids).
  • Instant Home Updates — if you’re house-hunting in NWA, set your criteria and get alerts the moment homes hit the market.
  • NWA Starter Pack — an in-depth guide to the region with city-by-city info, itineraries, and local goodies.
  • Weekly “What’s Going On in NWA” email — a Friday update listing events, openings, and local happenings so you don’t miss anything.

If you want any of these or want to talk more about neighborhoods, homes, or what it’s like living here, text or call me at 479.332.9631 or email phillip@allthingsnwa.com. I’ll help you get a feel for why I chose NWA over anywhere else in America — and why you might love it here, too.

Final thoughts

Northwest Arkansas is growing — and thoughtfully. From major cultural expansions like Crystal Bridges to big investments in water infrastructure and practical neighborhood-level changes like mixed-use developments and new aquatic centers, the region is building for the future. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or thinking of moving here, there’s never been a better time to pay attention.

See you next week for more NWA updates.
