4 Crazy and Wild Things Happening in Northwest Arkansas
Hi — I’m Phillip Shepard with All Things Northwest Arkansas. I made a quick roundup of four big, weird, and wonderful things happening across NWA right now. If you’re curious why I moved here (spoiler: I think Northwest Arkansas is by far the best place to live in America), grab a coffee and read on — or better yet, come visit and I’ll show you around.
1) The $100 Million+ Transformation on Fayetteville’s South End
There’s a massive rebuild happening on the south side of Fayetteville — a project north of $100 million that’s already been underway for about a year and a half. This isn’t a little patchwork job: it’s a full rework of the MLK corridor and surrounding exits that touch a lot of traffic arteries for the whole region.
Key points:
- MLK Road upgrade: MLK is one of the main east–west corridors in Fayetteville — it’s used by people going to Razorback events, the college, the high school, and a ton of businesses. The MLK exit is being reworked to move traffic more smoothly through the area.
- Weddington recently finished: Upgrades to the road north of MLK (Weddington) were a big win — that area had awkward traffic flow and it’s now much more navigable.
- New 15th Street exit: A lesser-known new exit on 15th Street will create direct access to the south end of Fayetteville and make travel to Elkins a lot easier. That’s a big win for Elkins — once the connection is complete, living there and commuting in becomes a no-brainer.
- Timeline: The full project is a marathon, not a sprint — current plans push completion out toward 2028.
Bottom line: This will reshape traffic flow and accessibility for years to come. If you’re house-hunting in the area, these infrastructure changes will matter to commute times and neighborhood desirability.
2) Dad Suggests Books — A Hobbit-Style Bookshop in Fayetteville
New local businesses are always exciting, but bookstores are especially delightful — and Dad Suggests Books in Fayetteville is something special. This isn’t just another rack-and-shelf shop; it’s a carefully curated, family-friendly bookstore and games shop with a Lord of the Rings / Hobbit vibe.
- Curated selection: Handpicked books and family games — thoughtful inventory, not just mass-market titles.
- Experience-focused: Hobbit doors, immersive design, and a space that encourages families and kids to stay, play, and hang out.
- Community vibe: Friends and their kids have already been loving it — they linger, they play games, they buy books. That’s exactly what you want from a local bookstore.
If you’re in Fayetteville and want a true local, cozy bookstore experience, go check out Dad Suggests Books — it’s exactly the kind of unique business we like to see grow here.
3) The Rise of Niche Bars — Meet The Blind Bear in Downtown Springdale
Late-night options used to be limited across much of Northwest Arkansas — the region has long felt like a bedroom community where things wound down early. That’s changing quickly. Specialty bars, speakeasy-style spots, cocktail lounges, and late-night entertainment are popping up in multiple downtown cores.
Case in point: The Blind Bear, a speakeasy-themed cocktail bar in downtown Springdale. It isn’t a hidden-door necessarily, but it brings that atmosphere to life with crafted cocktails and a late-night vibe that didn’t exist here as commonly before.
- Trend: Downtown Bentonville, Springdale, and other cities are getting more nightlife — bars stay open later, more music and dance venues are launching, and diverse night options are multiplying.
- Why it matters: If you thought there was “nothing to do after 10 p.m.,” that’s becoming less true. Springdale is especially worth paying attention to — it’s not the sleepy downtown it once was.
4) Onyx Coffee (and the Coffee Boom) — More Shops Across NWA
Onyx Coffee has been expanding across Northwest Arkansas at a fast clip. New shops are opening in key places: the airport, the Walmart HQ campus, downtown Fayetteville (including a location attached to a florist), and downtown Springdale.
- Consistent product: Onyx tends to deliver consistent, high-quality coffee experiences, so more locations mean more accessibility for locals and visitors.
- Expansion vibe: While they’ve focused on NWA, it’s reasonable to expect they may grow beyond the region eventually. For now, the density of locations is great for local coffee lovers.
If you’re a coffee person (and who isn’t?), you’ll see Onyx popping up more and more throughout NWA — and that’s a welcome development for a region that’s rapidly growing its food and beverage scene.
